What is Choi Kwang Do?
Choi Kwang Do is the art of Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, 9th Degree. Choi Kwang Do was officially founded on 2 March 1987. However, Grandmaster Choi developed this art throught studying and training in martial arts for over 50 years. During that time he consulted with American scientists and experts in bio-mechanics, kinestheology, psychology, and psychoneuroimmunology in order to validate his theories and concepts.
According to Grandmaster Choi, the sudden violent nature of most street attacks leaves little time for conscious thought, and almost no margin for error. Responses must be swift, correct and executed without hesitation. In essence, for students to defend themselves effectively, they must be trained to react automatically with proper conditioned responses.
In order to maximise this conditioned response, Grandmaster Choi has devised Choi Kwang Do according to three basic concepts:
- The movements must be practiced, natural, and easy to learn and remember.
- The movements must be bio-mechanically correct in terms of power and efficiency.
- The movements must be practiced repreatedly under gradually more realistic conditions.
As Grandmaster Choi explains, "By developing powerful punches, kicks and strikes, even those of smaller stature such as ladies and children, can generate enough impact to knock out or at least stun a much larger opponent".
Many of the traditional martial arts movements are difficult to learn and unrealistic in actual self-defence, even though they look very impressive. Choi Kwang Do movements are EASY TO LEARN and are VERY EFFECTIVE. From your very first lesson, your techniques are STREET ORIENTED. (Choi Kwang Do has been called, "The Art of Street Fighting".)
